Ingredients :
- Filling
- 2 lb Apples
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 4 cloves
- to taste sugar
- 4 oz raisins or sultanas
- Topping
- 8 oz plain / all purpose flour
- 5 oz sugar, your choice, I used dark soft brown .
- 3 oz butter
- 2 oz rolled oats (porridge oats)
Method :
- Preheat oven to 190C. Peel, core and cut apples into chunks. Use a mixture of apples for best taste and texture.
- Place apples in pan with cinnamon, cloves and sugar, do not over sweeten, I used 2 tablespoons in mine. Cover with lid. Over low heat bring slowly to boil. Stir occasionally, don"t allow to burn. Turn off heat.
- Place flour and sugar in bowl, add butter, cut in to chunks. Gently, using fingertips, rub butter into flour mix until mixture resembles breadcrumbs, stir in oats.
- Place apples in ovenproof dish (remove cloves), you do not need much juice, just enough to moisten apples, sprinkle raisins over top.
- Gently spoon topping evenly over apples, place dish on baking tray.
- Place in pre heated oven for 20-30 minutes until top is browned.
- Serve with lashings of custard or cream or ice cream. Beware, filling is hot..
- Adjust spices in filling to your own taste, I somtimes use ground ginger instead of cinnamon.
- You can substitute your favourite muesli for the oats.
